Instagram: A Break From Politics

Election season is already heating up as presidential hopefuls move through the various state primaries and caucuses. More than likely, your social media feeds and television commercial breaks are already full of political ads. Politics can be divisive and exhausting. Instagram is stepping up to the plate for those of us looking to escape the attack ads and political messaging. The social media platform has announced that "it will no longer 'proactively recommend' political content from accounts that users do not already follow." In theory, this means that users will no longer be bombarded with political content outside of what they already engage with. This policy will be extended to Threads and Facebook as Meta continues to shift away from prioritizing political content in its algorithms. While this policy will be the new default setting, there will be an option to opt in for political content recommendations. When announcing the new policy, the head of Instagram ma

Ben & Jerry's: Using Their Platform for Good

Image
Ben and Jerry's is an ice cream company that was 1978 and it is currently headquartered in Burlington, Vermont. Ben and Jerry's is my favorite brand of ice cream, which makes it really convenient that there is a shop right across the street. Ben and Jerry's has 1.5 million followers on Instagram, 401.1 thousand followers on TikTok, and 483 thousand followers on X. Personally, I only follow the brand on Instagram which I believe to be Ben and Jerry's most successful account. On TikTok, the brand is focused on making light-hearted content. There are videos about "What's your sundae personality?" and announcements of new flavors. On X, the brand reposts content from other platforms or directs users to their website or podcast through linked content. Instagram is where the brand makes the most impact. Ben and Jerry's motto is "Peace, Love, & Ice Cream" which can be found in all their social media bios. This is a motto that I believe the brand

Duolingo: Content Creation Genuis?

Image
One brand I follow on social media is Duolingo which is a language-learning app. I have used Duolingo on and off since high school. The brand has 810 thousand followers on X and 1.7 million followers on Instagram but has the most popularity on TikTok with 9.1 million followers. Duolingo posts daily content that is simultaneously relevant to pop culture, entertaining, and educational. The brand is also comfortable with making fun of itself, as they are often the subject of memes, and taps into fan-created content. For example, there are a lot of memes and threads on social media about the Duolingo bird being "hostile" and "threatening" in its reminders to users to do their language lessons. The brand leaned into this and actually started making joke threats to users about completing their lessons and not losing their streaks on the platform. The brand is very successful when it comes to keeping up with internet trends. Duolingo has produced content related to the Bar

Digital Reputation Mangement

Digital permanency, the idea that anything on the Internet is there to stay and will always be found, is why I think digital reputation management is so important for brands and individuals. Social media has greatly expanded how we learn about the people around us. Social media is used to stalk what our exes are up to, it is used by employers to vet potential new hires, and it is used to get life updates from friends and relatives. Personal digital reputation management is about creating an online persona that reflects who you are and what you value. For example, I am a people person who has a fear of forgetting things. When you look at my social media accounts, take Instagram for example, you will see that most of my posts revolve around my friends or my significant other and key events or milestones in my life. My online reputation reflects the community seeker and digital archivist that I am. When managing my online reputation, I should avoid things that would act to undermine that
